Automation Solutions for the Agriculture Industry

A.B Foods with its headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey, operates a large poultry farm near the town of Bandirma. An ABB automation solution based on the AC500 PLC is used to manage climatic conditions and food dispensing processes on the farm.



The AC500 automation system fulfills important customer requirements with regard to precision, reliability and size, at an attractive price and compelling performance features. Major requirements such as flexibly configurable I/O modules and the communication properties together with the CS31 system bus are also achieved.

The Automation Solution
ABB's scope of supplies includes:

    • a PM582-ETH CPU of the AC500 automation system
    • twelve digital I/O modules DC532
    • two analog I/O modules AI523
    • one analog I/O module AO523
    • eight ABB frequency converters ACS550

The ABB Products
The AC500 product family comprises high-performance PLCs for small, medium and large-scale applications, not only for central, but also for decentral control concepts. The high scalability makes it easy to adapt the AC500 to existing automation environments. Universal hardware is configured via software.

The digital and analog I/O modules are simply plugged onto the terminal blocks. The digital I/O modul DC532 offers 32 channels, of which 16 can be configured and defined as inputs or outputs.

The Benefit for the Customer
The AC500 system controls 36 fans, 4 ventilation flaps and 30 motors for feeding dispensers, thus ensuring optimum conditions for the environment and the development of the poultry. The results are higher productivity and a higher yield.

The temperature, air pressure, humidity and flap position is measured with analog inputs. The ventilation control depends on the outside temperature and parameters such as number, race and age of the animals. The necessary data are entered into the system via an external PC. Time schedules for automatic feeding are provided through an operator panel.
