Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland - 25th Anniversary of Cooperation with ABB

The Waterboard of Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland is competent for controlling the water levels in the polders of Delfland, a densely populated and highly industrialized region in the south west of the Netherlands. When updating the entire plant, the water authorities have placed an order with ABB to replace the existing programmable controllers in pump stations and flood barriers with the ABB automation system AC500.

The AC500 system fulfills the high degree of precision required by the customer, it is reliable and allows space saving installations. Once the upgrade process has been completed, some 200 modern devices will control the water levels.

The Automation Solution
ABB's scope of supplies includes:

    • Central units PM571-ETH and PM581-ETH of the AC500 control system
    • Analogue E/A modules AX522
    • Digital E/A modules DC522, DC532, DC551
    • Display and operating devices CP502
    • MCBs
    • Motors and frequency converters.

The ABB Products
The scalability and the modular platform concept of the AC500 PLC enables the configuration of individual and multiple automation solutions. This automation system can therefore be used as central control element or decentrally enlarged to fulfill complex automation tasks.

The flexibility of the S500 input / output modules AX522, DC522, DC532 and DC551 offer the customer highly efficient and economic reasonable configuration solutions. Their extensive diagnostic features and easy expandability make it possible to adapt the installation optimally to changing requirements whenever necessary.

The CP502 operation terminal offers extensive display functions of the processes in the installation and enables quick and uncomplicated access to ongoing processes.

The Benefit for the Customer
If spiral pumps or adjustable barriers are used to control the plant, various control configurations are available to ensure reliable water control functions. The communication between the operation devices and the controls is implemented via Modbus RTU.

The installation of the AC500 system also entails a change in the remote transmission of signals: To date, an alarm has been sent from the plant to a panel by a special monitoring device using an analogue telephone line. Now, communication is provided through GPRS and the AC500 panels will send an alarm independently and directly to an AC800xA ABB process control system.

Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland and ABB have been partners for more than 25 years. The customer appreciates in particular the following factors: availability of services and information whenever they are needed, high reliability of products, deliveries on time and the quality of technical support.
