ABB University's Dave Stephens explains why 800xA Engineering class to include Function Designer

2010-03-11 - ABB University's new course offering is the T315F&H

When Dave Stephens, Senior Technical Instructor – ABB University, was asked why the very successful T315 System 800xA Engineering class was being changed:
“ABB offers two main programming options. The traditional Control Builder (CB) languages; Structured Text, Instruction List, Sequential Function Chart, Function Block Diagram, Ladder Diagram, and Function Diagrams. The standard CB languages have been the core programming lessons of our previous T315 classes. The original T315 class is now the T315C&H System 800xA with AC 800M Engineering using Control Builder class.

ABB’s new System 800xA projects are being engineered with the Function Designer programming tool more frequently. Users find that the Function Diagrams developed with Function Designer are easier to understand, require minimal programming experience, offer better logic documentation, and advanced engineering functions are offered with Function Designer.

Function Diagram programming is a tool developed by ABB using the Function Designer application. It is a graphical interface-programming tool and is similar to programming tools that have been used by users of other ABB systems like Harmony Composer.

As a result, ABB University has developed the T315F&H System 800xA with AC800M Engineering using Function Designer class. The first week, T315F focuses on the Function Designer application, but still references Control Builder when necessary. The T315H portion is the HMI configuration class (graphics, alarms, logging, trends, etc.) and is the second week of the class”.

The T315C&H class continues to be the appropriate class for students with an 800xA project/system that includes logic created using the traditional CB languages.

A student would attend the T315F&H class if their 800xA project/system includes logic created using Function Designer.

Successful T315 students may return to attend the first week of the new T315F&H class at half of the tuition.
