Faster return on investment from a new range of ABB UNO string inverters

Mannheim / Munich, Germany, June 3, 2015 - The single-phase, string inverter family has been improved by reducing the weight and size designed to maximize return on investment in residential applications.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has extended its UNO single-phase string inverter family range with four new models, the UNO-2.0-TL, UNO-3.0-TL, UNO-3.6-TL and UNO-4.2-TL.

The UNO-2.0/3.0/3.6/4.2-TL family has been specifically developed to maximize return on investment for installation in residential applications. The new transformerless string inverter is targeted at the same residential market segment currently served by the PVI family, but brings additional value in terms of ROI, ease-of-installation, reliability and improved management. “The residential market is looking for cost effective solutions to extend the use of photovoltaic technology to an increasing number of domestic users,” said Giacomo Bambi, ABB Product Manager, Product Group Solar. “The new UNO string inverter family completes the ABB single-phase technology offering with solutions characterized by reduced weight and smaller footprint.”

More compact and lighter than the rest of the range, the new UNO family offers benefits in terms of ease of installation and aesthetic appeal. All connectors are accessible in the lower part of the inverter, including those toward the PV generator and the electric grid, and the RS485 connector for communications. Moreover, in the installation phase, speed and safety are guaranteed by the availability of quick connections. Thanks to the installation procedure, whereby the inverter doesn’t need to be opened because of the IP65 protection, the new UNO string inverter is absolutely ideal for installation and operation in harsh and demanding environments.

Communication toward the periphery is enhanced by the inclusion of an expansion slot that can host additional cards. Of particular note is the VSN300 Wifi Logger Card, which offers residential and commercial installation owners an advanced and cost-effective solution to monitor and control the photovoltaic plant. The Wifi card functions as an integrated data logger transferring data online to the ABB Aurora Vision® platform, where it becomes possible to review operational parameters and update firmware remotely. Local monitoring is also possible without internet connectivity via the mobile App Plant Viewer for Mobile or integrated webserver.

The UNO inverter’s performance will be further improved by the addition of a grid failure option. When a blackout occurs, an inverter will disconnect itself from the grid for purposes of safety. ABB plans to add an auxiliary AC plug, fed directly by the inverter, able to supply an AC current when a 1.5 kW power level from the generator is available.
