Axpo selects ABB e-mobility solutions for Italy

Genoa, Italy, April 17, 2018 - European energy group Axpo chooses ABB Ability™ remote monitoring and energy management system and charging stations for its growing e-mobility network in Italy

The electric vehicle (EV) market in Italy is expanding rapidly. Sales of EVs rose by 70% in 2017, one of the largest year-on-year growth rates in Europe. As a result, utilities and EV network operators are looking at the region’s fourth largest economy as the next big market for EV infrastructure.

Axpo Italia, fourth operator in the Italian free power market, is the local subsidiary of the Swiss utility Axpo, which produces, trades and distributes renewable electricity and gas in more than 30 European markets. The company is now expanding its network of charging stations across Italy in cooperation with ABB.

“Electric mobility is one of our key growth areas,” says Simone Demarchi, Axpo Italia chief executive officer. “We see great potential for the electric vehicle market in Italy, and ABB can help us harness that potential.”

Axpo recently selected ABB’s cloud-based, scalable remote monitoring and management system for EV infrastructure, with which ABB will monitor and control Axpo Energy Solutions Italia’s charging stations, diagnose faults if they occur, notify service teams and manage customer transactions.

The solution is delivered through the ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations Center, recently inaugurated in Genoa, Italy, which enables improved and more efficient operations and maintenance by collaborating with fully dedicated, co-located operations experts. Collaborative Operations delivers objective data insights that ultimately increase customers’ profitability. Consider for example that 90 percent of maintenance activities on charging infrastructure can be sorted from remote saving time, travel costs as well as reducing safety risks.

“ABB offers a complete solution for EV infrastructure, an industry in which we are a market and technology leader,” says Kevin Kosisko, managing director of ABB’s power generation and water business. “Besides monitoring and managing the network, our Collaborative Operations solution will process network data to predict maintenance needs and optimize operations.”

In addition to the advanced cloud services to constantly monitor and control from remote its charging infrastructure countrywide, Axpo has also requested the installation of several wall-box stations in the city of Rome. These new installations will allow even more charging points for Share’nGo fleet of electric cars. In Rome, Share’nGo - one of the main Italian providers of shared vehicles - operates only e-vehicles, so to contribute concretely to the Municipality effort to reduce emissions.

The market for electric vehicles in Italy received a further boost when the seventh race in the world’s number one all-electric motor sport, the ABB FIA Formula E championship, was held in the streets of Rome on April 14. ABB recently partnered with FIA as title sponsor, bringing its unrivalled expertise in electrification and digitalization and its leadership in electric vehicle charging solutions to write the future of e-mobility with Formula E.
