The downstream oil sector is a business of enormous scale and global geographic scope. Every day millions of barrels of a variety of crude oils from the far reaches of the world are processed in hundreds of refineries into hundreds of products, many with tailored, regional specifications. The global supply system routinely moves billions of litres of product per day through a complex network of terminals, depots and pipelines – using ships, barges, rail and tanker trucks to get to the end of the line.
